Bartolomeu Dias is often credited with being the first European to reach the southern tip of Africa in 1488. He named it the “Cape das Tormentas” . Later, king John 11 of Portugal renamed it (Cabo da Boa Esperança) “Cape of Good Hope.”
After his discovery South Africa became explored and colonized by the Dutch, British and other European powers.
South Africa’s Independence Day is called Freedom Day celebrated on April the 27th. Freedom day commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on April 27th in 1994 and the day on which the new constitution was introduced by its first President Nelson Mandela.
