Profile
The Ghanaian southeastern Mauritania and western Mali through the 8th and 12th century.
The area we call Ghana today was first settled by The Portuguese in the 15th century. Because of the areas abundance of gold, they called the land “Costa do Ouro,” which translates to “Gold Coast”.
With the arrival of British traders and missionaries, the British gradually extended their control over the “The Gold Coast” and formally established control in 1874.
On March 6th, 1957 Kwame Nkrumah, became the first Prime Minister and President declared “The Gold Coast” free from the rule of the United Kingdom. The name of this new independent nation would be called Ghana.
Every March 6th, Ghana celebrates its independence.
