Profile
Italy’s control over Eritrea began in 1890, following the signing of the Treaty of Wuchale which established the borders of Italian Eritrea.
Italian colonial rule lasted until 1941 when British and Commonwealth forces liberated Eritrea during World War II.
After the war, Eritrea came under British military administration until 1952 when it was federated with Ethiopia under a UN resolution.
The federation began in 1952 under the rule of Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia.
Tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia remained high, leading to the annexation of Eritrea by Ethiopia in 1962, effectively abolishing Eritrea’s status as a federated entity and making it a province of Ethiopia.
The annexation led to decades of armed struggle for independence by Eritrea, culminating in Eritrea gaining de facto independence in 1991 and de jure recognition as an independent nation in 1993, following a referendum in which Eritreans voted overwhelmingly for independence.
Every May 24th, Eritrea celebrates its independence from Ethiopia since 1991.
