Led by Cecil Rhodes, the land known to be the home of various African kingdoms (The Barotseland (led by the Lozi people) kingdom, Chewa Kingdom, Bemba Kingdom, Lundazi Kingdom) was renamed Northern Rhodesia by the British South Africa Company. They extended their control over the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, establishing Northern Rhodesia as a British protectorate in 1924.
At the forefront of the struggle for independence from British rule, was Kenneth Kaunda.
Kenneth Kaunda founded the Zambian African National Congress and later head of the socialist United National Independence Party (UNIP).
Kaunda became the first president of independent Zambia.on October 24th, 1964.
