Ahmadou Ahidjo served as the President of a political party, the Cameroon National Union (CNU), that advocated for independence from colonial rule.and achieved independence from France on January 1, 1960, with Ahmadou Ahidjo becoming the country’s first President.
On October 1, 1961,, The British-administered part of Cameroon also gained independence as Southern Cameroons and later voted to join the newly independent Republic of Cameroon to form a united nation.
Ahmadou Ahidjo played a vital role in uniting the two parts of Cameroon and consolidating the country’s independence.
Each year, Cameroon celebrates its independence on January 1st.
